Alabaster is the softest stone of the marble family. It is usually pure white (sometimes gray) with very little apparent graining. Because of its lack of color and its high absorbency, it is easily dyed. We carry dyed alabaster sets in brown, green, and blue as well as other colors and combinations. Painted alabaster is opaque and does not show the grain of the stone. All of our black alabaster sets and boards are painted. All alabaster pieces are sold as part of a set and cannot be split up. Alabaster pieces are always carved in the Staunton style as the stone is very brittle and is not suitable for intricate carving. Each set has been carved out of a single large chunk of alabaster and dyed together so that the unique graining and carving features of each set make them truly "one of a kind." In addition to the alabaster sets we carry marble sets from China. Marble is a harder stone than alabaster, comes in a variety of natural colors and has much more graining.
