Learning Chess - Chess Game Piece Roles

Whether you are brand new to playing chess or if you have been a chess player for awhile now, knowledge is power when it comes to improving your game. Therefore, having a true understanding of both the names and the proper usage of each chess game piece is very important. To win a game of chess, you need to carefully come up with a great strategy in order to beat your opponent. Therefore, playing chess is not only a great way to keep your mind sharp but it is also a lot of fun!

As you are probably already aware, the game of chess is played between two people. As with most any board game, you both alternate taking turns. One player will use all the white pieces, and the other player will then use all of the black pieces. The way the game of chess then works is that you each take turns moving one game piece at a time, and the person that manages to capture the enemy king is declared the winner of the game.

Next, let us take a look at each individual piece. First, there is the bishop. The bishop game piece can only be moved in a straight line diagonally. However, there is no limit to how many numbers of squares it can be moved. The rook game piece most often looks a lot like a small tower. You can move the rook either vertically or horizontally. As with the bishop, there is no limit to how many number of squares the rook can be moved.

The queen is considered by many to be the most powerful piece in chess because the options with the queen game piece are practically limitless. You can move in any direction you choose with the queen game piece whether that be diagonally, vertically or horizontally, and you may also move the queen any number of squares that you would like. As with the queen, the king game piece can also be moved in any direction. However, the king piece is somewhat limited as it can only be moved one square at a time.

The knight is usually easily recognized because it often looks like a horse. The knight piece moves in a rather strange pattern. This pattern is somewhat difficult to explain, but some say that it can best be described as making an L-shape. The knight is also the only game piece that is allowed to jump over other game pieces.

Last but certainly not least, there is the pawn. In the game of chess, pawns are commonly referred to as the weakest game pieces. One reason for this is they are somewhat limited in their movement, as one is only allowed to move a pawn piece forward and not backwards.

Best of luck, and I hope that you enjoy learning how to play chess!

5 Minute Guide to Backgammon Rules

Backgammon rules can be a bit confusing, especially if you’ve never even watched a friend play the game. Luckily, once you break the instructions down, it is not only easy but extremely fun to play! Below are quick and easy directions on how to play the popular game which has lasted for centuries.

The first thing you should know is that backgammon is a two player game. Each player has a home board and outer board, along with fifteen pieces. The board is very similar to checkers or chess, except it consists of twenty four points. The object of the game is to move your pieces into your own home board and then “bear” the pieces off the board. It’s simply a race, and whoever bears their pieces first, wins the game!

One of the most important rules to be familiar with is that your pieces can only move in one direction. This all depends on the color of your pieces. Your white ones will move clockwise, while your black pieces will move in the opposite direction. You should also know that backgammon is usually played for stakes. In order to begin playing backgammon, the players must both roll the dice and whoever scores a higher number will move first. When you start to roll the dice, remember that both dice make up a separate number. For instance, if you rolled a two and a four, you can either move six spaces or take two pieces and move them separately. This is great for strategic moves.

If you are trying to move your piece to a point that is already occupied by the opponent’s pieces, you have to look elsewhere. However, if your competitor only has one piece on the point, you can easily knock him off and put your own pieces on the spot. This is another similarity between checkers or chess. Luckily, this game is much more addicting and easier to maneuver.

Although backgammon rules sound complex, they are actually very easy once you start playing. As long as you think about your strategy before moving the pieces, you should be able to do pretty well. If you love checkers but hate the complexity of chess, this game is definitely for you. It allows you to easily play the board, yet strategy and concentration are involved. Nonetheless, it is necessary to know the basic rules of the game before playing. On the other hand, many people learn as they go, thus making it easier to comprehend. For many, reading all of the instructions before hand will just add more confusion. With backgammon being one of the easiest games to learn, it should be a painless task convincing all of your friends to play.
